JOB TITLE:                      Head of Measured Building and Topographic Surveys

RESPONSIBLE TO:        Managing Director     


Manage the whole life cycle of all jobs within the measured building and topographical surveys department. Manage the sales pipeline, the quotation process through to project completion, delegating when appropriate and escalating relevant issues and queries to the MD.

Manage the work allocation and scheduling of all jobs within the department.

Manage and develop a measured building and topographic surveys team.

Have an in-depth knowledge of all measured building, 3D modelling, point cloud, scanning and topographical surveying processes using scanners, total stations and GPS technology.

Have an in-depth knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, N4ce, MBS and other desk top software packages.

Oversee the quality of surveying work within your department and undertake some senior surveying responsibilities as required by the demands of your department.

Who we are

Powers & Tiltman Measured Surveys provide measured land and building surveys to architecture, engineering and construction companies in the UK. We exist to limit the potential of project over-runs or over-spend by solving our clients’ complex measurement and mapping dilemmas pre, during and post construction, helping them to keep their projects running on time and within budget.

The land surveying profession is seeing unprecedented change in how projects are delivered to clients with increasing emphasis on advanced software deliverables. Powers & Tiltman considers itself a learning organisation, constantly updating the skillsets and equipment of its high performing teams deployed to construction sites around the country and is always on the lookout for like-minded individuals to join their growing team.

We are searching for senior or principle surveyors who are looking to grow into their next management position. For the right person, this role is highly autonomous and we welcome applications from people who consider themselves intrapreneurs.

We need people who can cope with pressure and are able to juggle survey work with team development and the growth of their department. We’re looking for positive, articulate people who are able to challenge the status quo and are constantly looking at ways to improve the way we do things in order to develop all aspects of their business. We’re looking for people who can look back over the year and confidently list their team’s contributions and proudest moments.

Characteristics and skills we’re looking for:


You confidently develop relationships with clients, liaise easily with the company’s sales consultants and have a handle on your growing sales pipeline.

Easily win repeat business through fantastic client relationships.

Happy to network to develop new clients and go to client meetings to demonstrate the most excellent and professional service you deliver.

You can estimate upcoming projects from emails and in discussion with the client and your team.

Department Management

Your survey knowledge is bang up to date with substantial experience and you have high quality survey methods and data management skills to deliver the variety of projects our clients require.

You have a degree or higher, or a professional qualification in Geomatics or related discipline (highly desirable).

You have an in-depth knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit and how our clients use this software to meet their own end needs.

You understand the scanning process and how to adapt point cloud in readiness for processing. Total stations, scanners and GPS are pieces of equipment you use regularly and you know how to get the best out of them.

You are used to planning multiple projects at any one time, working to deadlines with great project management skills.

You are disciplined in following processes and can easily update or follow new methods or processes because you know that they are important to how efficiently they make the business run.

You can problem solve in all aspects of surveying, both on site and in the office, and can juggle time spent in the office with going on site to train junior teammates or push through a backlog of work.

You’re happy to challenge the status quo in order to make something easier, faster or more accurate.

You’re happy to take on extra responsibilities to make the business work smoothly.


You have an excellent, ‘can do’ attitude. Nothing is a problem, just a conundrum to be solved.

You collaborate easily with the other heads of department and have amazing powers of persuasion which gets the job done.

You can manage a team of 3+ from apprentices to senior surveyors and you can easily share team members when organising daily work.

You know that self-development is the only route to scaling up your department and regularly find the time to work on this, both in and outside of work.

You routinely work with your team on their annual goals and competency development and see their success as your own.

You are happy to volunteer for special projects that will bring a step change to the business.

Branding and Marketing

You’re keen to work with the marketing department to make sure the word is spread at how great your company is.

You’ll happily contribute images, text, words and time to promote the work that you do.


You understand the financial aspects of the business and can cascade department targets and budgets to the rest of your department’s team.

You make time to understand the company Key Performance Indicators and how they can be improved.

You’re happy to challenge the figures and are committed to the growth of both the turnover and the profits of the company.


You understand that the company works in a highly regulated industry and that the company’s certification is important to good governance, best practice and protecting the people within it.

You’re happy to get involved in audits and certification meetings to ensure the company stays compliant.

Must Haves

UK Driving Licence

Good physical fitness as surveying work can be physically demanding

Professional accreditation (CICES/RICS) or working towards senior accreditation.
